Green Energy from footsteps

Laurence Kemball-Cook

Pavegen is a way for people to generate green energy from their footsteps whilst walking down the street. 55,000 people a day walk down a busy London street. Imagine the potential to generate renewable energy from people on the way to work or going shopping? Pavegen could power pedestrian lighting, way-finding solutions, advertising and information panels. It allows people to take part in the energy saving process themselves unlike other renewable sources and is a fun experience especially for children. Only a small portion of the energy is used to light up the slab itself and it lets people see a small portion of the energy they have just generated as a visual reward. The Pavegen slab is a retro fitted paving slab that can be installed in minutes in the ground in either indoor or outdoor environments to generate renewable energy for a building or area. It has minimal installation and maintenance requirements with no planning permission needed as well as being highly visual and engaging to users. Places for this technology could be: Transport hubs, Retail areas, Schools and advertising solutions.
