Helping rural Kenyan primary school children

Charles Coldman

As an 18-year-old I spent four months of my gap year in a rural community in south-east Kenya. This experience opened my eyes to the severe absence of decent educational infrastructure at the primary schools in the area, and I made a promise to the headteacher of one of these schools that I would return to give the pupils a better school. My idea was African Promise: a UK registered charity which over the last couple of years has been helping to construct classrooms, libraries and other facilities in five village schools. From an initial fund-raising amount of over £20,000, African Promise has begun to transform the lives and futures of the children of the Kasigau region of Kenya. We have ambitious plans to extend and broaden the scope of our programmes into more schools in Kenya and a grant of £10,000 from Microsoft would provide the necessary funding to put in place the structures in the UK and Kenya that would allow us to do just this so that we could reach out to many hundreds, if not thousands, more Kenyan school children who are in desperate need of our support.
